The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced new formats for Men's ODI World Cup and Men's T20 World Cup in Following its annual meetings in Edinburgh.
ICC Men's ODI World Cup – What has changed?
The ICC Men's ODI World Cup will now feature four rounds, including a round-robin Super Series round to be played before Round 2 (the group stage).
Round 1 will be played between teams 12, 13 and 14.
The top team will progress to Round 2, along with the other 11.
In the ICC Men's ODI World Cup, instead of the previous 'Super 6' format, seven teams will now qualify for the semi-finals. According to the ICC, the aim is to make every match more significant and exciting.
The top four teams will qualify for the semis, scheduled as follows: Teams 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3.
ICC Men's T20 World Cup – What has changed?
A major change in the men's T20 World Cup format is that the number of teams in the tournament's second stage has been increased from 8 to 10. This could boost the chances of more "emerging" teams reaching the second stage.
To begin with, the 20 teams will be divided into five groups of four teams each, rather than four groups of five teams as in the previous format.
Two teams from each group will progress to the next round.
The Super 8 will be replaced by a Super 10, with two groups of five each.
Secondly, after the top team from each group qualifies directly for the semi-finals, two IPL-style eliminator matches will be played between the teams finishing second and those finishing third in the respective groups.
Following the two Eliminator matches, the two semi-finals will be held, followed by the final.
