1. First World Cup Win

Back in 1983, India made history under the leadership of Kapil Dev by winning its first World Cup. Despite not being the favorite to win, the national team pulled out all the stops, defeating the mighty West Indies, who were the defending champions, in the final game. This victory is credited with boosting the popularity of cricket in India as well as changing the way the country is perceived on the global stage.

2. Sunil Gavaskar 10,000th Run

Cricket superstar Sunil Gavaskar became the first batsman to reach his 10,000th run in the history of Test cricket, against Pakistan in 1987. Gavaskar built a solid reputation throughout his 16-year career, breaking numerous records and establishing himself as one of the greatest batsmen in Test cricket. However, he will also be remembered most for achieving this 10,000th run milestone and for the joy that it brought the cricketing community.

3. World Cup Final

Exactly 20 years after Kapil Dev secured India’s first ever World Cup victory, it seemed as if the stars were aligned for history to repeat itself this time with Sourav Ganguly leading the team. However, fate had other plans, as the Indian team came up short against Australia in the final. Despite their disappointing loss, the Indian team was still celebrated for the spirit they showed throughout the mega cricket event in South Africa, making it a nice memory overall.

4. Mini World Cup Win

Two years after their historic World Cup win, India participated in the Mini-World Cup tournament in Australia, which saw seven teams, including England, Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand, the West Indies, Sri Lanka, and of course India, battle it out on the field. India came into the tournament as underdogs, as they had recently lost three straight series despite their triumphant win over the West Indies in 1983. However, against all odds and under Gavaskar’s excellent leadership, India successfully defeated Pakistan, their arch rivals, by eight wickets in the final.

5. 2001 Test Win

March 2001 saw one of the most memorable Test matches at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, with Australia suffering an embarrassing defeat against the once again underestimated Indian team. The team, led by Sourav Ganguly, went head-to-head with the legendary Steve Waugh’s Australian team, which had just come off the back of a tremendous 15-match winning streak. The youthful Indian team was undergoing a transitional phase with a newly appointed coach, John Wright, as well as many under-experienced players who were roped in for the high-profile series. The Indian team still managed to persevere despite the unfavorable circumstances.

6. Securing Number 1 Test Rankings Spot

India snagged the top spot in the ICC Test ranking back in December 2009. The team, at the time captained by MS Dhoni, managed to maintain their spot up until 2011, when England dethroned them. However, just a few short years later, they managed to claw their way back to the top in 2016.

7. Second World Cup Win

2nd April 2011, is a date that few cricket lovers could ever forget. And how could they? 28 years after winning the inaugural World Cup India managed to score another ICC Title thanks to MS Dhoni’s direction. That’s right, although they lost two of their most important players along the way, Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar, India came out victorious with Gambhir's 97 and Dhoni's determined 91.
